Walmart Supports One Book One Philadelphia on 10th Anniversary
Today, the Free Library of Philadelphia and Walmart officially launched the 2012 One Book, One Philadelphia program. For eight weeks, concluding on March 17th, the program will feature events, discussion, cultural activities and more. As lead corporate sponsor, Walmart is very excited to partner with the Free Library as it celebrates the 10th Anniversary of the One Book program and reaches more Philadelphians than ever before.
One Book, One Philadelphia is a joint project of the Mayor’s Office and the Free Library. It promotes reading, literacy, library use and community building by motivating tens of thousands of people to read an annual featured selection. This year’s reading selection is Edwidge Danticat’s Create Dangerously: The Immigrant Artist at Work.
Edwidge Danticat’s Create Dangerously: The Immigrant Artist at Work is a powerfully moving collection of essays and memoir. The collection of essays takes its name from Albert Camus’s last published lecture in which he stated, “To create today is to create dangerously.” The book illustrates the struggle of making art in exile—and what it’s like to exist in a country constantly in conflict, where even the act of reading means taking a stand against oppression.
